sweet tooth from Making A Lather

Every color of candy is my favorite after I make them. All the purple sweet tooth blocks are finished for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I am thinking that I have too many rainbow scrap projects. I am struggling at the end of the month to get them all done. But, I really like them all. Maybe next year I will exercise a little more sense.

This is one of the planters by our back door. I planted the yarrow and the little pansy. The rest of what is growing are volunteers from last year. I didn't ...

Friday check in: batik crumbs flimsy from With Strings Attached

Bumblebee on wild indigo, baptisia alba. Also called false indigo.  (Pine Dunes Forest Preserve on Tuesday.)

The sunshine and moderate temperatures are great for walking.  This morning (Friday) we are finally getting some rain.   That's fine because I have a lot of office-work to catch up on.

In the studio:

The batik crumb HSTs got lost in a straight setting.

They stand out more as flying geese.

The flimsy used 5 yards.  I still have 2 yards+ of the turquoise batik. (The tag pinned to it said it was a 2014 purchase in the red tag section at Joann ...

Midweek: a finish, basket BOM, and more batiks from With Strings Attached

Batik Bars is quilted and bound!

I got the swirly Asian print way back in 2000. I remember that because I stopped at a quilt shop the weekend I went to an out-of-state wedding. I thought it would be good for a jacket. Over the years I'd take it off the shelf and think about using it (though the idea of a jacket was long gone). I just couldn't cut it up  so I used it in its entirety.   (The other green print on the right came from the birthday bash stash. The one at the bottom was ...

Weekly update: passages, a finish, hopscotch, and two great books from With Strings Attached

Signs of spring: the scilla have begun to bloom.  The aquilegia (columbine) have sprouted. Bring on the daffodils!

In home improvement news, the 50-year-old windows were replaced this week.  (The exception is the five-pane bay window in the living room which has to be custom-ordered.)  My bathroom remodeling is finally done with the last wall patch plastered over and painted.

We had to bundle up on Friday to plant blue pinwheels for Child Abuse Prevention Month.  It's one of the GFWC-Illinois signature projects.

Sad news:  two Zion Women's Club members passed away last week at age 91 and ...

sweet tooth from Making A Lather

I have my candy blocks ready for April and the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. Angela dropped the hint for the color a little early, so, I quick made crumb blocks and tada.. candy. I have baggies of strings sorted by color for the year.

It looks like I have some cutting to do with my pink scrappy strips. Last year, I was a little overwhelmed with my rsc choices for projects. This year, I was minimal at the start. But, with each passing month, I am adding something new that catches my eye. I think I just really ...

Weekly update: spring, a fabric excursion, progress, and the unexpected + books from With Strings Attached

Chilly but sunny, no breeze this afternoon for a walk in the ravine at the end of our block. The skunk cabbages are in bloom -- this one has leaves beginning to unfurl.

Here are my new socks from Zkano, made in Alabama. Not only do they have great designs, but the socks are very comfortable (nonbinding tops that stay up).

On Thursday I enjoyed the luncheon meeting of the Clara Cummings Book Club. The entertainment was a reenactor portraying Princess Diana. She cleverly began, "You know I am dead, of course," so we the audience knew that she knew what ...

Sweet tooth candy blocks from Making A Lather

I woke up one morning, and, I wanted to make noodles. That was odd. Who wants to make noodles when you can open a bag from the store. The house was quiet, and, I cracked open a few eggs and started. It was a very sentimental time, and filled my heart with love for all the really great women who had taught me how to make noodles. I first thought of my Mother, who has been gone for 20 years. I could see her unrolling those long noodles and she talked about her Mother teaching her. It was an art ...

Crumb Blocks - Can't make just one! from Elaine Adair Pieces

Marsha gave me a shoebox full of scraps about year ago.  I put them together, aiming for 6 1/2 in. chunks.  It was difficult to actually stop sewing little bits together!  Lots of fun - I wish I'd not used the cornerstone in the sashing, but live and learn - those busy blocks like "plain" sashing better.    This is about 44" x 58"   It finished up so quickly, I already gave it back to Marsha.  Go ahead, give this crumb block thing a try!  I sorted the scraps into mostly red, white and blues.

Today, I'm making Christmas Trees ...

template twirls top from Making A Lather

I have a new  top ready for the "to be quilted" closet. This was an experiment using the creative grids crazy six template. I really like the scrappy twirls from the black. The border was an extra border I had made for another quilt and didn't use. It was great to find a home for it on this quilt

The colorful parts are crumbs from my string and crumbs bin. There is so much fun in such tiny pieces.
It is just like doodling with fabric and any color works.

small piecing from Making A Lather

I made it to our Friday  quilt group yesterday. I was trying to catch up with my sea swept blocks. I made some progress on the diamond part of the sashing.

The weather has been so nice. High seventies and sunshine. I really don't like when the cicadas make the sound of fall coming. The summer has passed so quickly.

I am still working with darks for the tiny houses and the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

I did have 3 aqua ish strips for the psp 20/21 blocks

oops found these on the floor

I have ...

crumby stars from Making A Lather

I am catching up the crumb star blocks I needed for June and the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I made a few darkish tiny houses.

I am just now making the red exclamation points for May for the full stop quilt that Angela is doing.

I made a few this morning since I was so close

we have had rainy weather for a few days and the weeds are sooo happy.

one monthly goal from Making A Lather

I am a little late setting my goals for July.

I really want to keep sewing my sea swept sashing blocks - I hope to finish them this month.

I am sneaking in one of my ufo quilts - Aunt Eliza's star -- on to the longarm. I really want to get it quilted this month.

I haven't been spending much time sewing lately. I need to make a list of the next steps needed on my works in progress, and then, I won't just stare at the mess and not know what to do. A list is much more ...

Eliza is a top from Making A Lather

I am happy with the top of Aunt Eliza's stars. This was my one monthly goal for May. Which I didn't get ready on time. It turned out larger than I expected. 82x 92. My favorite part is the border. I am not sure where it came from, but, I know it is a vintage piece since it was 36 inches wide. And it is so cute.

It was so windy that I almost didn't catch a shot of it before it rolled itself into a ball.

It is time for this quilt to live in the ...

seeing stars from Making A Lather

This is as far as I have gotten to a finish with this Bonnie Hunter quilt ufo, that, I started before she printed the pattern. I didn't like her version (xing) from string frenzy, so it was time to decide how to finish it. I have a vintage red fabric, I want for the borders.

I have bonnie Hunter quilt zuckerwatte from her book string fling. on the frame to quilt. So I may have a finish next week.

eliza star from Making A Lather

I have started the sashing for Elizas star. So far, I have sewn 2 inch wof strips to each side of 5 1/2 inch wof strip of gingham x 4. I subcut them at 2 inches. I didn't calculate the sashings between rows, so, I will have to make and cut more.

I wanted to see at least a few sewn together. Not all the blocks are exactly the same size ( how did that happen haha) .I have to do a bit of stretching or easing. Most of the pieces are on the bias, so, I can.

I ...

red crumb stars from Making A Lather

I made 10 crumb stars for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. May's color is red. After a few years of following along with the rainbow scrap challenge, I was surprised that there were very few small red scraps. I still have more than I need, but I have, apparently, weeded the smallest pieces out of the scraps. Even, the 2 1/2 inch strip bin was mostly long strips. And I have used all my 2 1/2 inch squares. It was a bit of a struggle to find the pieces for the crumb centers.

After 3 ...

May Goal from Making A Lather

I am not getting comment notification in my email - any fixes?

This is a Bonnie HUnter quilt ufo, that, I started before she printed the pattern. She showed making the blocks during a quilt cam, and, we were at least a year away from the book ( string frenzy) release. I had  most of the string centers in my stash of crumb blocks. I hunted around for the pattern, made it in 3 different sizes, chose my favorite size, and, made them in our room in Florida over Christmas. I thought I could get ahead a bit by having my blocks ...

shirt sandwiches from Making A Lather

Sew day was Saturday with the guild. I had a new project I was anxious to start, and, I wanted to get the borders on this scrappy shirt quilt. I had started the string/crumb borders on Friday. When I laid the quilt out to measure, and cut the borders, I didn't like them at all. Which was a great reason to switch to my exciting new project. That was just what I needed to think about the borders for a bit, and, realize I just needed to keep going. Often, I don't like something at one stage ...

more crumb stars from Making A Lather

Over the weekend, I realized that I had made more crumb stars in other colors than in blue. I know blue is the scrap color I have the most, so why was I short on blue? Well, some had been scooped up in a cleaning job, and, had gone missing. And, I found a few more blue crumbs.....Now, I have 9 more blue crumb stars. The first blue ones are here

We have had a rainy weekend. Sometimes, in the Spring, a good rain makes all the flowers look brighter. Such a lovely time of year.

I am linking ...

crossed strings from Making A Lather

Making the longer pieces for crossed strings, although challenging to find long enough pieces, is straightforward. sewing and cutting the side pieces takes a bit longer. I was aiming for 48 blocks. Once again, string piecing makes a mess. I grab a handful, and see if I can pull pieces to use out of the pile.

After the piece is made and white was added, I still needed to cut it in half.

Of course, the best part is seeing all the block variations with all the different leftover bits and pieces from other projects.
